There is a massive pool of untapped talent from which businesses can benefit through second chance hiring. Second chance hiring is good for employers, potential employees, and society at large.
For former felons, trying to re-enter the job market can feel like a heavy weight on their shoulders. It is not as simple as making their resume look nice and preparing to pull off a great interview. They have to know where to look. Statistics show that seventy million Americans have a criminal record—that is 1 in 3 adults. There are currently 2.3 million people behind bars in this country, 95 percent of whom will reenter our communities through release or on probation. 640,000 people are released from prison each year, creating a huge untapped workforce available to fill jobs.
With unemployment in the U.S. at the lowest rate (3.9%) in 19 years, companies like Apple, Boeing, McDonalds, and Delta Airlines are hiring former felons to help meet their employment needs..
When trying to implement second chance hiring practices in your business, start by educating your recruiting team and managers on the challenges faced by individuals with criminal records.
There may be gaps in a resume. Focus on the candidate’s aptitude and their ability to perform on the job by conducting a skills-based assessment, which is a best practice for eliminating bias in hiring.
Previously incarcerated applicants with a criminal history need to know that you are open to their application.
